Onkyo promises THX Ultra2-certified performances from new flagship network controller and integrated Receivers

Press Release dated: 22 Aug 2011

Leading home entertainment innovator Onkyo is excited to announce the release of its flagship PR-SC5509 network A/V controller and two high-end integrated 9.2-channel A/V receivers - the TX-NR5009 and the TX-NR3009 - to crown its 2011 range of precision crafted audio-visual products for 2011.
The two receivers deliver all the quality you would expect from top of the range home cinema components: vast amounts of clean power, a host of connectivity options for ease and flexibility of use, and powerful, intelligent processing for crystal-clear playback of the very latest A/V formats. The PR-SC5509 network A/V controller, meanwhile, is designed to partner a high-end multi-channel power amp (such as the Onkyo PA-MC5500) and incorporates all of the state-of-the-art processing and connectivity features of the TX-NR5009, minus the amplification. All three components are THX Ultra2 Plus certified for distortion-free playback in large rooms.
When it comes to input options, the TX-NR5009 is hugely versatile. The unit sports eight HDMI inputs (two gold-plated) and two outputs (one gold-plated). Alongside you’ll find two USB ports, a Universal Port (for Onkyo peripherals) and an RGB input for video content from a connected PC. Users can also download and install free Onkyo Apps that turn their Android or iPod touch/iPhone into a full-function remote control for these receivers/network controller. As ever a hard-wired Ethernet connection is recommended but an optional UWF-1 wireless LAN adaptor is available for connecting to a home network.
As you might expect the TX-NR5009 has been designed to seamlessly connect to the new generation of user-customized Internet radio stations and streaming music services, including Spotify, last.FM, Napster AUPEO! and vTuner. The receiver is also DLNA 1.5 specified for media streaming and can interface with USB-compatible portable music devices as well as play music straight off a USB thumb drive. Naturally, the unit handles the widest variety of audio formats, including FLAC, WMA Lossless, WAV, AAC, Ogg, MP3, and, for audiophiles, Super Audio CD.
With 9.2 channel operation - and Onkyo’s Zone 2/3 capability for fully-powered stereo audio from different sources in two other rooms - users have the flexibility to fine-tune their home cinema set-up to an amazing degree. The task is made that much easier thanks to Audyssey’s sophisticated MultEQ XT32 room-correction and equalization technology, designed to deliver an optimum audio performance regardless of a room’s shape or acoustics.
Onkyo has been an early adopter of DTS Neo:X, an audio processing technology that allows users to augment a basic 5.1-channel set-up by adding speakers in three main configurations. As implemented in these new receivers, Neo:X can be used to bring out more in the way of subtle ambient sounds or even remove the need to install rear speakers  while still delivering a cinema-like experience.
Engineered to set genuinely new performance standards the TX-NR5009 harnesses decades of Onkyo home cinema know-how. Power flows efficiently from a massive high-current toroidal transformer through two 22,000µF audiophile-grade capacitors, with dedicated separate transformers installed to handle audio and video. The system also employs top-quality three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry in its 9 x 220w power stage (being a controller the PR-SC5509 includes the transformers but without the other power amplification features.)
Audio signals received by the TX-NR5009 are refined with PLL jitter-cleaning technology while separate aluminum panels encase the low-resonance chassis to help eliminate vibration. Onkyo's renowned VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) helps achieve a highly accurate level of digital-to-analogue signal conversion the quality of which is easy to hear. Powerful 192 kHz/32-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs on all channels, coupled to a 32-bit DSP chip, contribute to the receiver achieving its prestigious THX Ultra2 Plus certification.
The TX-NR5009’s next-generation video processing power is extraordinary. An HQV Vida VHD 1900 processor lies at the heart of the system, and brings standard video images to life in high definition. The chip employs multi-cadence tracking, expanded 12-bit colour-processing, and smooth, motion-adaptive de-interlacing to optimise quality and detail. Marvell’s Qdeo technology, meanwhile, upscales 1080p video to a full 4K (3840 x 2160), even from sources already upscaled by HQV Vida from lower resolutions to 1080p. This combination of remarkable technology enables the viewer to enjoy spectacular images of unparalleled colour and clarity.
Onkyo's eye for detail extends to providing conveniently backlit remote controllers as well as an overlaid graphical OSD for swift, seamless, and simple adjustment of settings during a program, game, or movie. As user interfaces on A/V products go this is one of the best.
The second integrated A/V receiver model in this release, Onkyo’s TX-NR3009, offers many of the advanced features of its more powerful sibling, with a few differences. It employs 24-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs for instance, rather than 32-bit DACs; it forgoes the higher model’s gold-plated terminals and, in place of 22,000 µF capacitors and a toroidal transformer, it uses 18,000 µF capacitors and a massive EI-type transformer to deliver 9 x 200w. With this slightly different feature set, the TX-NR3009 manages to deliver a level of cinephile performance nearly equivalent to that of the TX-NR5009, but at a more affordable price point.
Whichever model we’re talking about these three new releases demonstrate Onkyo’s ongoing commitment to offering innovative, integrated, and high-performance home cinema products to music and film lovers all over the world.
